Convicted of espionage Whelan transferred to a maximum security colony


United States citizen Paul Whelan, convicted in Russia of espionage for a long prison term, was transferred from Mordovian colony No. 18 to maximum security colony No. 17 in the village of Ozernoy, Zubovo-Polyansky district of the region. This was announced by the chairman of the regional Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) Valery Kruto. Transferred to colony No. 17, TASS quotes him. According to the news agency, on June 15, the Moscow City Court found Whelan guilty of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in prison. The defense of a US citizen said that she did not plan to appeal the decision. Lawyers said that it is planned to begin negotiations and organize the exchange of Whelan for convicted citizens of the Russian Federation in the United States.
