Dying young: why did the Romans carry monkeys from India

The ancient Romans during the period of possession of Egypt massively imported monkeys from India, scientists found out. Residents of the port of Berenika on the Red Sea tried to keep rhesus monkeys as pets. However, monkeys could not adapt to the new conditions, suffered from the lack of fresh fruits and died early.
